Climbing the People Tree: Fair Trade Fashion on the Rise

People Tree

Managing a successful fair trade business targeting Japanese consumers is a difficult task knowing these consumers are the most affluent, and demanding in the world in terms of quality and attention to detail. Safia Minney, the founder of a Tokyo based fair trade brand People Tree, stepped to the challenge thirteen years ago and currently operates a store selling People Tree clothing and products in Jiyugaoka, a highly fashionable area of Tokyo, distributes to her home country, the United Kingdom, and manages a mail-order catalog in both countries. Though knowing very well that being involved in the fair trade business is not volunteer work but a business, approaching the struggling workers to meet the demands of both Japanese consumers and buyers is still a harsh task. However, regardless of having to watch out for small mishaps in the handmade clothing or keep up with harsh color trends, People Tree’s slow rise to popularity is evidence that even a previously unexplored business such as fair trade, can rise to success in Japan.

FTA Exchange: The Next Step to Japan-Philippine Relations

This bilateral agreement is a first such agreement for the Philippines, and is extremely attractive for the recent influx of nurses wanting to work overseas for economic reasons. Though the high pay may be the initial reason for these Filipinos to want to migrate to Japan, perhaps other economic effects might take effect as a result of this form of cultural exchange.
