UFJ bank seeks merger to form the largest bank in the world

UFJ
MTFG

UFJ Holdings, Japan's fourth largest bank, is seeking a merger with Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group to form what would be the world's largest banking corporation.

The new bank would have total assets of 188 trillion yen (1.74 trillion dollars) and would overtake Citigroup as the biggest bank in the world. Although UFJ Holdings posted its third consecutive annual loss (402.8bn yen) and has bad debts of 3.95 trillon yen, it is understood that the merger proposal is attractive to MTFG because it would allow them to tap into the retail and consumer lending markets that is UFJ's strength and MTFG's traditional weakness

Japanese Government is planning to tax wireless lan use

Fireworks

The Japanese Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications is planning to tax Wi-Fi (wireless lan) use in Japan.

Recently Wi-Fi use has exploded and the government see this as a potentially lucrative tax income source. To date Wi-Fi has been exempt from radio spectrum fees that radio, television and mobile phones incur but that is set to change next year. The ministry is planning a revision to the radio law that would allow them to impose taxes on Wi-Fi use. The tax will most likely be an extra sales tax charge applied when the Wi-Fi equipment is purchased.
