Imports of U.S. poultry suspended |
||
|
Japan along with Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea, have suspended imports of U.S. poultry to prevent the spread of bird flu, an official of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry announced on February 7th. This temporary measure was taken in response to the report that the virus was detected last week at a farm in Delaware, U.S.A., even though the virus is a different strain to the one sweeping across Asia and thought to be of no danger to people. The amount of poultry imported from U.S. is 50,000 tons annually, which follows to Thailand, Brazil, and China. Japan, who have already stopped importing from Thailand and China, has temporarily lost 68% of total imports of poultry, which corresponds to 20% of total domestic consumption. This will cause quite an impact to the restaurant industry in Japan. |
