Light of Hope

At the end of December, the 17th Kobe Luminarie was held in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. The glittering light festival has been held annually in remembrance of the Great Hanshin Earthquake which struck the region on January 17, 1995. But this time was different. Hoping to assist others in overcoming difficulties and to inspire courage, its theme – "Light of Hope" – was addressed to the victims of last year's catastrophic Great East Japan Earthquake.

Mothers Think Differently
Now When a crisis hits, everyone looks to mom for help. When a national crisis hits, as it happened in Japan last year, mothers were asked to be even more protective, caring and well mothering than normal. Early last year in the April 2011 issue, I described an ongoing research series called "Real Mothers," where we have been tracking the lifestyles, interests and views of today's Japanese mothers with children. Now we have released the eighth annual report in the series, with a focus on how these women have coped in the post 3/11 era.
