Miyamae got its start in the industry in April 1967 in the manufacture and sales of electronic fishing reels. Initially regarded by sportsmen as unorthodox, the electronic reels gradually gained fans after their advantages became known on a television fishing program. With 43% of the market share today, the Miyamae Pok brand of electronic reels are exported around the world to the Americas, Europe and Asia. Having pioneered the industry in deep-sea fishing, Miyamae holds nearly 100% of that market share, with sales growing annually due largely to the increase of retirees.
Toshihiro Miyamae established Miyamae Light Metals in the Ikuno district of Osaka in April 1949, erected a plant in the Aramoto district to expand business in October 1960, and then changed the name to Miyamae in April 1974. When first established, Miyamae manufactured aluminum washbasins and school lunch service utensils. When the spread of plastics reduced the need for aluminum in those markets, Miyamae turned the business downturn into an opportunity, using their expertise in plate metal engineering to branch out into the fields of air conditioning ducts and odd-shaped pipes. As manufacturing expanded into leisure goods such as fishing gear and golf goods, sales grew immensely. Including its main plant in Higashi Osaka City, Miyamae holds six factories around Japan and is expanding its customer base to leading companies with sales locations in Tokyo and the US.
After bringing to market the Commando X line, an electronic reel for trolling and deep-sea fishing with superior class quality and functionality, Miyamae continued its product expansion with the powerful yet inexpensive Commando X-4 line, small- and medium-sized electronic fishing reels equipped with a remote control. Their recent launch of the US-50 product has been a popular topic in the industry, being the most powerful reel in the world, designed for professionals and amateurs alike and capable of hauling in a tuna weighing more than 650 pounds (330 kg).
In the golf industry, Miyamae sells a line of golf shot robots, four models for testing out golf clubs, an indispensible device for golf club manufacturers. For the general golfer, they also sell the Putting Checker to analyze putting technique and software that allows up to four players to play at putting over nine holes. Other products Miyamae manufacturers include a golf head speed meter, a shot analyzer, a video analyzer and other products for the driving range.
