MATSUDA METAL INDUSTRY CO., LTD. has been manufacturing parts for household utensils, pot parts, one- and two-handed handles and lid knobs for 62 years. They hold 90% of the Japanese market in stainless steel and aluminum pots.
Originally, one person would work at each injection molding unit, then package the product when it was ready, but this has been automated with the development of specialized robots for handling products.
When thermoset resins such as phenol and melamine are molded, the mold is heated to 330° F (165° C). Full automation was not previously possible for screwing hardware such as lid knobs and caps, but with advances in mold technology, the manufacture of dozens of products is now possible twenty-four hours a day, with people required only for packaging. One person can now manage seven machines. With no defects, Matsuda Kinzoku Kogyo produces a uniform number of quality goods in a set period of time.
One of Matsuda Kinzoku Kogyo’s hit product is the hook-shaped knob. Another was the quail egg-shaped knob, produced five years ago, and selling 100,000 items per month when ramen pots were popular. “When things sell well, we stay with the flow,” says President Matsuda. “When sales are down, we create new products. We must have innovation to remain in business because handles and knobs just won’t last. Even a long-selling product lasts only about five years. We work to produce products that are sensitive to the times, working at providing a wide selection, high quality and safety.”
